The Wisconsin Association of Repeaters (WAR) announces that it has begun the formal process of winding up its affairs and transitioning repeater coordination responsibilities to Wisconsin Repeater Alliance, Inc. (WI-RA), a newly established nonprofit organization created to support the future of amateur radio repeater coordination in Wisconsin.
After careful evaluation of the organization’s operational status, governance requirements, financial sustainability, and long-term viability, it became clear that the most effective path forward was not simply to continue operating under the existing structure, but to create a new organization capable of meeting the current and future needs of Wisconsin’s amateur radio community.
For many years, WAR served as Wisconsin’s repeater coordination body and helped establish and maintain coordination records across the state. Like many volunteer-driven organizations, however, WAR faced growing challenges related to organizational participation, governance, succession planning, technology infrastructure, record management, financial sustainability, and regulatory compliance. These challenges increasingly limited the organization’s ability to effectively serve repeater owners, clubs, coordinators, and stakeholders throughout Wisconsin.
To preserve the important work already accomplished while ensuring repeater coordination remains available for future generations, WAR has initiated the transfer of its operational responsibilities, approved digital assets, coordination records, historical archives, and institutional knowledge to Wisconsin Repeater Alliance, Inc.
WI-RA has been established as a modern nonprofit organization dedicated to continuing and strengthening repeater coordination activities throughout Wisconsin. The new organization is being built on a foundation of transparency, accountability, sustainable governance, financial oversight, and broad community participation.
As part of this transition, Wisconsin Repeater Alliance is developing a modern coordination management platform designed to replace aging systems and improve the overall coordination process. The new platform will provide enhanced record management, improved coordination workflows, public access to repeater information, interactive mapping capabilities, and modern tools to support coordinators, repeater owners, and amateur radio operators across the state.
The transition also presents an opportunity to modernize organizational governance. WI-RA is establishing updated bylaws, policies, financial controls, succession planning procedures, and operational standards intended to ensure the long-term stability of repeater coordination in Wisconsin. Existing coordination records and historical information are being preserved to maintain continuity while providing a foundation for future growth and development.
The transition will occur in phases, including the completion of incorporation activities, establishment of organizational infrastructure, migration of records and technology systems, and the orderly wind-down of the Wisconsin Association of Repeaters. Coordination activities will continue under the stewardship of Wisconsin Repeater Alliance as the transition progresses.
This effort represents more than a change in organizational structure. It is an investment in the future of amateur radio repeater coordination in Wisconsin. By building a stronger and more sustainable organization, the objective is to preserve the legacy of repeater coordination while creating a framework capable of supporting the amateur radio community for decades to come.
The Wisconsin Association of Repeaters extends its sincere appreciation to the many volunteers, repeater owners, clubs, coordinators, and amateur radio operators whose contributions have supported repeater coordination efforts throughout Wisconsin over the years. Their work laid the foundation upon which this next chapter is being built.
